Europe since the 1990s. India's own brands since the 2010s.

Our first export container left Agra in the 1990s. Since then the factory has made for retail brands in Germany, Poland, Spain, France and Greece, and has shown its own range at Expo Riva Schuh in Italy, where the photographs on the right were taken. At home the same lines are made for India's leading footwear retailers.

Shoes have been made here since the Mughal court, 1526.

Agra became the Mughal capital in 1526. Europe had spent the thirty years before it searching for a sea route to India: Columbus sailed west for it in 1492, Vasco da Gama found it in 1498, because Indian cloth, spice, dyes and worked leather were worth the voyage. Agra's shoemakers began with embroidered silk and velvet pairs for the court, then boots for the army, and the trade never left. Today the city is India's largest footwear cluster, with tanneries, soles, lasts and components inside it, which is why a sample correction here takes days rather than weeks.
